Frequently asked questions

On this page we have tried to include everything you need to know about the Wareham Short Mat Bowling Club. We have laid it out in a “Frequently Asked Questions” format but if you have a question that is not “frequently asked” then please do use the “Contact Us” form which can be found at the bottom of the page as well as on the main menu above and we will do our best to answer it!

How long has the club been established?

The club was formed back in 1991 and has run continuously since then and has gone from strength to strength

How is the club managed?

We are a 'private members club' run with non-profit making aims in accordance with the club constitution. The club has formal policies to govern its management, its finance, it responsibilities to health and safety and its commitment to equal opportunities.

Where does the club meet and play?

We meet in Furzebrook Village Hall, about 2 miles south of Wareham.

How many mats do you have?

We have four mats which means we can provide enjoyable bowls for twenty-four people at a time. We generally play pairs and triples preferring to avoid fours unless we have an exceptional number of members turn up.

How many members are the in the club?

It obviously varies from time to time but we generally have around forty members or so and we can have anything from twelve to twenty members turn up for our general club sessions of play.

Are guests welcome?

Yes, we welcome guests. Guests may attend two sessions but after that they would be expected to join the club if they wish to go on playing with us. You may find our page with more information about coming along as a guest helpful especially as it has dates and times of the sessions where guests are most welcome ...

I have never played bowls before, can you teach me?

Yes, of course, we would be pleased to teach you. So that we can arrange to spend time with you to give instruction and coaching we need to agree a suitable time. Normally this would be a Friday afternoon when we usually have the capacity for an extra mat that we can dedicate to this purpose. Plese use the contact form to get in touch and we will sort something out.

What equipment will I need to play?

If you do not have your own equipment then the club can lend you woods from its store but these are size three and four and may not suit small hands (for our course we bring in smaller woods for smaller hands). At the very least you must have flat soled shoes. Ribbed soles damage the mat and playing in socks leaves your feet vulnerable and at risk. You may find our "Getting Started" page helpful ...

Are you accepting new members?

We try to be always open to new members and can usually accommodate a few new faces. Rarely would we turn anyone away.

What does it cost to join?

Membership is £10.00 per annum of which £6.00 goes to the Dorset County and English National Associations. Thereafter we pay a 'sub' every time we play. The amount can vary depending on the health of the club's finances but is generally £2.50 per session

At what level does the club play at?

In addition to our internal roll-ups and competitions our members can play in one of our teams in the Dorset County League and may also play in Dorset county competitions and for the Dorset county team. Exceptional players may wish to go on and play at national (and even international) level.
